Phagwara Law Gate Alarm: Rising Crime, Drugs and Student Safety Fears Threaten Phagwara’s Reputation as an Academic Hub

Date:

PHAGWARA, PUNJAB — The Law Gate area near Lovely Professional University (LPU), once promoted as a vibrant off-campus residential zone for students, is increasingly becoming the focus of concern among residents, students, and education observers due to persistent issues related to drug abuse, safety, and alleged misuse of legal processes.

Located at the intersection of Phagwara, Jalandhar, and Hoshiarpur districts, Law Gate has grown rapidly over the past decade as thousands of students enrolled at LPU sought accommodation outside the university campus. This unplanned expansion has turned the locality into a dense cluster of paying guest houses, private hostels, and rental apartments, many of which operate with minimal regulatory oversight.

While the area continues to attract students from across India and abroad, multiple stakeholders now warn that unresolved law-and-order challenges threaten not only student safety but also the long-term academic reputation of the region.

One of the most frequently raised concerns by students and local residents is the prevalence of drug abuse in student residential pockets. Punjab has long struggled with narcotics-related challenges, a reality reflected in broader reporting on how drug abuse in student residential pockets mirrors wider enforcement gaps across the state.

Several students interviewed for this report said they were aware of drug consumption occurring within private accommodations and nearby streets, often during late-night hours. While these accounts remain anecdotal and have not been independently verified through official records specific to Law Gate, they echo patterns seen during statewide anti-drug operations carried out by Punjab Police.

Public health experts note that easy access to narcotics in student areas not only endangers individual lives but also creates an atmosphere of insecurity that affects academic performance and mental well-being.

Beyond narcotics, residents have raised allegations that certain properties in the Law Gate area are being misused for illegal activities under the cover of student housing. Observers point out that such claims often intersect with concerns over illegal drug distribution, which authorities have acknowledged remains a persistent challenge in several parts of Punjab.

Legal analysts stress that these allegations must be approached with caution. Under Indian law, unverified claims cannot substitute for evidence, and due process remains essential to protect innocent parties. However, repeated complaints from diverse sources have led to calls for closer scrutiny by civic authorities.

Another troubling issue highlighted by students involves allegations of bribery and the misuse of legal provisions during disputes involving tenants, landlords, and intermediaries. Some students allege that minor conflicts have escalated into legal threats, creating pressure to reach informal settlements.

There are also concerns about fabricated or exaggerated cases being filed, particularly against students who lack local support systems. Courts have previously intervened in similar matters, emphasizing the importance of legal procedures and safeguards against unlawful arrests.

Local police authorities maintain that they conduct routine patrols and enforcement actions in student-dominated areas. According to official reporting, police have registered multiple NDPS cases in Phagwara, including instances where NDPS enforcement actions led to arrests and drug seizures.

Police officials have also stated that their focus in 2025 includes intensified checks and verification drives, with routine patrols and enforcement actions aimed at curbing crime and traffic violations.

Despite these assurances, student groups argue that fear of retaliation, social pressure, and uncertainty about legal outcomes often prevent young residents from approaching authorities.

Safety concerns in the Law Gate area are compounded by past violent incidents near student housing that have drawn national attention. In one such case, a Sudanese student was fatally stabbed while intervening to protect fellow students, highlighting the risks associated with violent incidents near student housing.

Such cases have intensified calls for stronger preventive policing and community engagement in student-dominated neighborhoods.

Education experts warn that the implications of these unresolved issues extend beyond immediate safety concerns and could begin affecting institutional competitiveness.

“Universities today operate in a highly competitive global environment,” said a senior education consultant familiar with international student recruitment. “If safety concerns, drug-related incidents, and allegations of illegal activities around student housing continue unchecked, it could directly impact admission numbers. International students have multiple options worldwide, and security is often a decisive factor.”

The expert added that perception plays a critical role in higher education branding, cautioning that sustained negative attention could erode confidence among parents and overseas applicants.

According to The Tribune, six women nationals from Africa were nabbed in Jalandhar in 2024 for looting passers-by, highlighting past incidents of crime in the region. Such events underscore ongoing concerns about public safety and the need for stronger vigilance, particularly in areas frequented by students, like Law Gate near LPU.

The Law Gate area remains a vital economic and educational artery for Phagwara. Yet observers caution that ignoring persistent warning signs risks long-term damage to the city’s reputation as a safe academic destination.

As authorities continue to assert their commitment to lawful enforcement, stakeholders emphasize that transparency, accountability, and proactive governance will be essential to restore confidence and ensure student welfare.
